This is a poem I composed (désolée, en anglais seulement) relating to changes in our behaviour as a result of technology's rapid changes. Happy reading!
Save the mailman.
Holding a paper made of pulp
Delivered at your door
Read under the light's bulb
Walks and faithfully
Does his rounds in the neighborhood
Who now gives him credit
All these years worked so hard, doing all he could
What did he ever do wrong
To deserve such alienation
Technology took over
Victim of human creation
It has been around
even before telegram
Communication taken a new direction
With social media, instagram
Holding our dear one's thoughts on paper
We'd unwrap an enveloppe
Sent from friends and family afar
A beloved proposing to elope
Many stories could be told
From this ancient world of correspondence
One day will be recalled upon
As it sadly drifts away, victim of dominance
Sweet were the days
We'd patiently wait for a letter to arrive
Letting time take its course
Or unexpectedly, what a surprise
Much effort was put into it
Hand written, stamp sealed
Nowadays it takes a fraction of time
To send an email, anything could be revealed
Expression has taken on a new meaning
It has become instant
It's pushed us to process quickly
Including our emotions, at times very heavy
Impatient, we declare them at once
Not giving time its rightful place
To let things pass and dust settle
Frienships and relationships altered to a new level
What links us together now
Ties, inevitably have been transformed
A mother board, cell phones and wifi
Much in need of a reform
We still have human contact
Let this not be taken away
A phone call, a gathering
Voice conversations needed without delay
To bind us together as we were meant
Hearing their voice, seeing a face
From which we get much more
Today a rarity, almost a grace
We keep connected somehow
This much credit technology deserves
For those extended ties or loved ones
From whom otherwise would not be heard
In today's crazy times
Family members live in different countries
On technology we rely on
As we search for better lives, other realities
What awaits not sure I want to know
It must involve a robotic form
Things done so automatically
Ignoring human nature, what not to transform
On most days we are stable and coherent
Emotions and thoughts are part of our existence
Let that not be terminated one day
And become part of reminiscence
What is more blissful than a gathering
Doing an activity all enjoy
Dancing, board games or just conversations
Technology, please don't destroy!
Friends, acquaintances
Ties formed electronically
They cannot be compared
To real ones, at least not for me
Can they be trusted
What was your first impression
What lines were written
Perhaps an invention
In some cases maybe not
In the better good we are to believe
What brings us together
Is still our human nature, to my relief
Human senses remain untouched
Not yet replaced with robotic form
Or something more efficient
To save time and go faster, inform.
What do we do with all this extra time
Work longer hours, hoping to get a raise
I can call my mother tomorrow
Time is ticking, what a race
Do I really need a bigger house or new car
In the end what is more valuable
Than to be with loved ones
Why do we have to be so vulnerable
Gratitude is felt at this moment
The gift of time passing slowly
I can feel it running through my fingers
Caressing my inner child's hair, blissfully
We need much less than we think
Happiness can be so simple
Enjoying one's own company,
Savouring silence or solving a riddle
Families have evolved
Generations improving, hopefully
Most people feel they need to be connected
At all times, at least virtually
What keeps a family together
These days I wonder
So much importance in socializing online
How about listening to rain drops, sounds of thunder
Nature is all around us
At least to this day
It has brought me so much
Let us not go into astray
Unwrapping the gift of life
So much to be thankful for
Preserve what is precious
Our humanity, what not to ignore.
